EVERY CHILD
DESERVES A
HEALTHY
START
Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, clean, and healthy environment. Clean water, safe toilets, and good hygiene are not luxuries – they are the foundation for a child’s health, dignity, and future.
In many rural and underserved areas of China, children still face water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) challenges. Unsafe drinking water exposes them to diseases. Poor sanitation in schools and homes increases the risk of infections. Without hygiene awareness leads to preventable illnesses like diarrhea and pneumonia—two leading causes of death in children under five. These conditions harm children’s health, disrupt their education, and hold back their development.
World Vision’s WASH program protects vulnerable children by improving access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. Our approach is practical and impactful - we bring clean water and safe toilets closer to homes and schools, breaking down the barriers to these essential services.
We support communities develop and maintain safe water systems – so families have reliable, year-round access to clean drinking water.
Access to Clean and Safe Water
Improved Sanitation
We construct and upgrade toilets in schools and communities, with a focus on safety, dignity, and inclusion—especially for girls and children with disabilities.
We teach children and caregivers the importance of handwashing and disease prevention through engaging, age-appropriate programs led by trained facilitators that promote lasting behavior change.
Hygiene Education
“I wish I could use clean tap water all the time!”
Xiaoyang, whose primary school in the remote hills of Liping County, once shared this simple wish. His school, which sits near the top of a hill, had long struggled with water shortages. “Water stopped coming to school,” he recalled. “We had to fetch water from a well.”
Without running water, daily routines became difficult. “We need clean water to drink, wash our bowls after lunch, flush the toilet, and wash our hands,” Xiaoyang explained. “But the well water isn’t clear, especially when it rains. It’s dangerous and dirty to carry water from the well.”
For Xiaoyang and his classmates, the wait for a functioning water system felt endless. But one day, everything changed.
“Our school has tap water now!” he exclaimed with joy. “We don’t need to walk to the well anymore and we have more time to study. We’re cleaner and won’t get sick so easily. I really hope we can keep using this clean tap water!”
Alongside the new water system, Xiaoyang and his classmates took part in health education sessions on diarrhoea, pneumonia, and the 7-step handwashing method. “Now we all wash our hands before eating, after using the toilet, and after playing,” he said. “If I wash my hands well, I won’t get stomach pain or diarrhoea. I’ll be stronger.”
Xiaoyang also helped dig ditches and lay water pipes. “My classmates helped too. I used my own hands to help. I feel proud,” he said. “Water doesn’t come easily. I will treasure it. I won’t damage the pipes or taps. Even though we have enough water now, we must use it wisely.”
This transformation—clean water, better hygiene, and student participation—has left a lasting impact. Xiaoyang’s story is just one example of how access to safe water can change lives.
With clean and easy access to tap water, daily life at Xiaoyang’s school has been transformed—from fetching unsafe well water to enjoying better hygiene and more time for learning.
Why It Matters
Clean water, safe toilets, and good hygiene are essential to protect children's health and support their growth. When children have access to WASH:
They fall sick less often from preventable illnesses like diarrhea and respiratory infections.
They can attend school regularly and focus on learning.
Families face fewer health-related burdens, and communities grow stronger and more resilient.

Help build or improve handwashing stations and toilets in schools. Your support ensures children have access to clean, safe facilities that promote regula hygience and a healthier learning environment.
Support a School or Community Water Supply System
Your contribution helps fund the construction or rehabilitation of water systems that provide safe, reliable water to either a school or an entire community – reducing the burden of water collection and improving overall well-being.
Teach Personal Hygiene Practices to Children
Your donation supports our trained facilitators in teaching children essential hygiene habits – such as handwashing with soap and safe water use - to prevent common illnesses like diarrhea and pneumonia.
How Can You Make a Difference
Handwashing with soap can reduce diarrhea diseases by 30% and respiratory infections by 20%.
