Disaster Risk Reduction

Children in China are no strangers to the negative impact of the climate crisis, which is a frequent contributor to natural disasters. Many have witnessed the effects first-hand including droughts, floods and extreme storms, with consequences like risk to life, devastation of property, displacement from home, and deprivation of food and necessities. United Nation Secretary General Antonio Guterres reminds us, “Despite the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, the world mustn't forget the deeper environmental emergency facing the planet. The world must work together, as it has to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, to support a green and resilient recovery, which leaves no one behind.”

World Vision is working with teachers in China to train children in disaster risk reduction (DRR), a best-practice approach to keeping safe in the face of natural disasters. Given the heightened vulnerability of children and youth in disaster situations, it is imperative that they be equipped with knowledge to prepare for and take care of themselves when disasters occur. We are helping to strengthen education curriculum to include resilience building and is training teachers in the use of inclusive activities to familiarize children with DRR.
